iPhone SNES Emulator Sneaks into iTunes App Store

Certain types of apps (such as emulators) are banned from the iTunes App Store, but one developer snuck in a SNES emulator trojan horse style by disguising it as a file browser for Dropbox and FTP, called Remote File Manager. The app works as advertised, with the ability to open a variety of file types, including SNES ROMs.

To get the secret SNES emulator working in the app, simply upload a SNES ROM into your Dropbox folder, and open it on your iPhone using the Remote File Manager app. It will detect that the file is a SNES ROM and will automatically launch the emulator so that you can start gaming away without wasting time.

We’ve tried the app out ourselves and it works rather well, opening up SNES ROMs without a fuss, although the touchscreen buttons are a bit iffy (as with all touchscreen buttons, really). However, you can play games in portrait mode, where the controls look like a SNES game controller, or you can play SNES ROMs in landscape mode, with the display in the middle and the buttons on the left and right sides of the iPhone’s display. The nice part is that the buttons are mostly out of the way, with only a bit of overlap; we can’t say the same thing for most other emulator apps out there.

Other than that, Remote File Manager is kind of a useless app, as there are plenty of other apps like it that are much better, and the Dropbox app has its own file explorer anyway. However, I think what the developer is really getting at is the functionality of the hidden SNES emulator, including the auto-launch when a SNES ROM is detected, which is a really nice touch.

Surprisingly, Apple hasn’t caught the app yet, so it’s still available in the iTunes App Store, and it only costs $0.99. However, it’ll only be a matter of time before Apple catches on, so be sure to grab it now while you still can before it disappears. $0.99 is certainly a good price, considering that emulators on Android usually cost at least a few dollars each. Sadly, Remote File Manager only works with SNES ROMs, so your original NES ROMs are no good here.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Apple iPhone 5 will lead handset display manufacturers to a 55% gain in revenue in 2013

According to a report by DisplaySearch, demand for higher resolution, larger touchscreens will help handset display manufacturers increase revenues by 55% this year. Part of the increase is coming from the higher average price for smartphone displays along with a 15% increase in the number of panels that will be shipped this year to 1.9 billion units. But the main factor in this increase in revenue is the larger sized screens being used on smartphones.

Hiroshi Hayase, VP of small- to medium-size displays at DisplaySearch, credits the displays used on two popular handsets, the Apple iPhone 5and the Samsung Galaxy S4 for the increase in high-end flat panel displays. The report notes how the AMOLED screen on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is now 5 inches with resolution of 1080 x 1920 with on-cell touch, up from the 4.8 inch 720 x 1280 panel on the Samsung Galaxy S III. By the same token, the increase in the glass from the 3.5 inch 640 x 960 resolution screen on the Apple iPhone 4S to the 4 inch 640 x 1164 (with in-cell touch) on the iPhone 5 has led to a growth in revenue for LTPS TFT LCD manufacturers.

The average selling price of an AMOLED screen has risen from $48.36 in 2012 to $49.37 in 2013. The average selling price of an LTPS TFT LCD screen is $34.57 this year, up from the $26.74 achieved last year. AMOLED screens are expected to grab a 37% market share of the mobile phone display industry this year. LTPS TFT LCD panels are forecast to be right behind with a 36.1% slice of the pie. Low priced, high volume a-Si TFT LCD displays, used in the Chinese handset market, will be third with a 26.5% share according to DisplaySearch.

Why You’ll Still Buy the iPhone, Even As Other Phones Get Better

I don’t think it’s up for discussion any longer: the iPhone, while attractive and intuitive, isn’t a very cutting edge smartphone. I don’t expect that to change when the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C make their alleged début this September either. Apple is perfectly fine shipping this year’s smartphone packed with last year’s toys. So how then does Apple continue to excite millions of potential smartphone users around the world?

It isn’t openness, Apple doesn’t want users customizing its software experience like they do with Android. Even though the company seems to have borrowed much of its new design aesthetic in iOS 7 from Microsoft’s Windows Phone, I’m not entirely sure users are flocking to the devices for the way iOS looks either.

No, the reason users continue to turn to the iPhone and iPad above all else is something I hadn’t picked up on until I recently began researching a story for GottaBeMobile. It’s theiTunes Store.

For years I’d loathed installing iTunes, and when Microsoft’s Zune and Windows Vista arrived I took the opportunity to cut the Apple cord for good. I sold my iPod Touch, uninstalled iTunes and the four other applications that it forces on users, and never looked back.

After that I moved on to just Microsoft’s offerings. I use an Xbox Music Pass and the Xbox Video Store to buy all of my essential media. For books, I’ve turned to Kindle. Although Microsoft’s offerings have gotten better in the space, they seriously haven’t reached the point of being an all-inclusive solution for media, despite my hopes.

Even when I turned to Google’s Android operating system this year, I had some quaint idea that the experience would finally put all the media I wanted in one place. Unfortunately, the relatively lax requirements for apps to get accepted into the Google Play Store, coupled with the bad usability brought on by its latest update, made that a nonstarter.

So when I found myself installing iTunes and entering my old Apple ID, I couldn’t resist the urge to head into the iTunes Store. I wanted to know if its layout was as clear as I remember, or its ‘Buy’ button still as satisfying to click. I wanted to see if finding the podcasts, television shows, movies university lectures and safe applications was just as easy as I remembered. Of course it was.

And that’s because Apple knows the truth about why people buy their devices. Users don’t care about blazing fast processors when their operating system is optimized for their hardware. Similarly, they don’t care about large 1080P displays when they’ve got the easiest and largest content library the world has ever seen.

People keep buying iPhones and iPads in the face of better offerings because of the iTunes Store. It’s there, it’s always accessible, it has every type of media you could want on the go. It also organizes all of that media in a way mere humans can choose what they want and download it.

The pull of the iTunes Store is so strong that even I thought twice about selling my HTC One and picking up an iPhone 5. If I – a longtime lover of all things not made by Apple — am considering coming back for iTunes, how many average users would consider ever leaving iTunes for other, less greener, pastures?

iPhone 5S Launch Date All But Confirmed

The iPhone 5S launch date, which had been rumored for September 10th, is now all but confirmed thanks to support from a source that reliable when it comes to inside knowledge about Apple’s launch plans.

In response to an AllThingsD report that claimed Apple is planning to launch the new iPhone 5S on September 10th, The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple issued a ‘Yep’ which means that the date is very solid and essentially all but confirmed. Dalrymple is known to have inside knowledge of Apple’s plans and he issues one word responses that can make or break rumors.

Already, in the past, we’ve seen him shoot down an iPhone launch rumor so it appears that the information in regards to the September 10th date is spot on. Now, it should only be a matter of time before Apple confirms the launch date with an invite to members of the media, an invite that should be for a venue somewhere in Northern California.

Rumors suggest that the iPhone 5S will be the star of the event. The device is expected to replace the iPhone 5 as the company’s flagship smartphone and rumors suggest that it will be keeping the elder iPhones aluminum and metal design while employing a new camera, improved processor and quite possibly, a fingerprint reader for enhanced security.

Should the device arrive on September 10th, it’s likely that the iPhone 5S release date will come in late September. Apple typically releases devices a few weks after their launch dates. The company tends to announce both pre-order and release dates at its iPhone events meaning consumers should have an iPhone 5S release date in just a few weeks.

Apple is also rumored to be announcing an iPhone 5C, a cheaper version of the iPhone that is rumored to be coming with a plastic back, several color options, 8MP camera, 4-inch Retina display and a cheap price tag. It’s not clear if it will replace the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S as the company’s budget offerings or if it will simply head to expanding markets like China to compete with cheap Android devices.

Apple’s launch event will be taking place about a week after Samsung announces its new flagship, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which is set for a debut on September 4th.

How to To Use Airplane Mode on the iPhone?

The iPhone is a great tool for keeping us connected, but what about when that connection needs silenced? While do not disturb mode is great for eliminating notifications it still has the cellular service enabled, which is a problem when riding on an airplane.

Luckily the iPhone has a built-in setting for scenarios such as these. It is ironically called airplane mode. With airplane mode turned on all connections such as Cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth are off so that you can use or stow the iPhone without causing any interference.

While there has been debate whether cell phones do actually cause problems for airplanes, it is best to comply to the rules just for safety. When airplane mode is on, the setting stays in place even if you turn the iPhone off. This is handy to know, so if you are overly cautious and turn the iPhone off before boarding, airplane mode will stay enabled when you turn the iPhone back on during or after the flight.

How to enable Airplane Mode.

Tap Settings.

At the very top of the screen is the option for airplane mode.

Set the slider to ON to enable airplane Mode.

With airplane mode enabled, all data connections remain inactive, so leaving the iPhone locked instead of fully turned off on an airplane is acceptable. An option to consider is using the iPhone’s WiFi if in fact the plane offers this service. Thankfully more and more planes have this service, and to use it is important that airplane mode remains enabled. By keeping airplane mode on, cellular service does not function, but you can turn WiFi back on with these steps.

Underneath Airplane mode tap WiFi.

Set the slider to ON.

Choose the network you are connecting to and enter the password, if necessary.

Up in the top left of the screen you will notice that both the Airplane mode icon and WiFi are both present, which verifies that the steps were properly completed.

As a reminder: receiving any phone calls or SMS messages is not possible while using airplane mode. Be sure to turn this setting off once the plane lands to re-enable this essential part of the iPhone.

iPhone 5S vs. iPhone 5: What Buyers Need to Know Right Now

With fall on the way, smartphone buyers are likely becoming increasingly conflicted about which phone to pick up thanks to a healthy dose of rumored devices which included theNexus 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and iPhone 5S. Those leaning towards an iPhone are likely debating between the rumored iPhone and the iPhone 5 and thanks to rumors, there are some important details that consumers need to know about their match up right now.

During the first half of last year, rumors of an iPhone 5 were rampant with the company rumored to be introducing a revamped, redesigned iPhone to replace the iPhone 4S. Initial rumors had pointed to a redesigned iPhone 5 in the fall and that’s exactly what occurred. Just ahead of its September launch, Apple issued invites for an event in the early part of the month. That event wound up being the launch pad for the current iPhone model, the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 went on sale just a few weeks later, thought thanks to demand, the device was nearly impossible to find for the first few weeks of its existence. The demand was due in part to the iPhone 5′s upgrades which included 4G LTE data speeds, a new larger 4-inch display and a redesign that replaced the plastic and glass with glass and metal and slimmed the device down to a mere 7.1mm.

To this day, the iPhone 5 remains one of the best smartphone options on the market and one that all smart shoppers should be taking a look at.

The iPhone 5′s reign will come to an end at some point though and it’s looking like that reign will be toppled by a new iPhone dubbed the iPhone 5S which is expected to make its debut later on this year. Unlike some companies, Apple typically keeps its older smartphones around with cheap price tags, meaning, the iPhone 5 still has a lot of life left in it.

As we approach its launch date, consumers are likely wondering how it stacks up against the iPhone 5S. And while we can’t be sure, there is enough out there to make some comparisons.

Here is what prospective iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S buyers need to know right now.

iPhone 5S Launch Approaching Fast

The iPhone 5S launch date is approaching fast.

Rumors about the iPhone 5S launch have been swirling in recent weeks as we approach the start of fall, set to begin in late September. While Apple has yet to issue any invites to a media event and with insiders shooting down specific launch dates, it’s still not entirely clear when Apple is planning to announce the iPhone 5S.

However, September at this point seems to be the most likely candidate. Rumors all point to a September launch and iOS 7 release rumors also are pointing to September. It’s possible that all of this information is off base but it’s looking increasingly likely that September is going to contain the iPhone 5S launch date.

What this means is that prospective iPhone 5 buyers may want to put their money down and wait a few weeks to see what develops. At this point, it’s clear that things are moving forward and a launch is imminent. And buyers would be foolish to pay full price for the iPhone 5 right now with a replacement on the way and an iPhone 5 price drop coming in the near future.

iPhone 5 Price Drop

Recently, a rumor emerged indicating that Apple will be dropping the iPhone 5 from its lineup once the iPhone 5S arrives, a move that would apparently be aimed at bolstering iPhone 5S sales.

As we’ve pointed out, there are tons of holes in this rumor and it’s unlikely to happen. Instead, Apple will more than likely drop the iPhone 5 price down to $99 on-contract, same as it did with the iPhone 4S before it, and offer the iPhone 5S at $199.99 on-contact. This will obviously make the iPhone 5 way more attractive than it is right now especially because it’s a smartphone that will receive iOS updates for years to come.

Don’t expect the iPhone 5 to disappear from shelves.

Even if Apple does drop the iPhone 5 from its lineup, retailers will still have plenty of stock left and we should see them drop their prices regardless of what Apple does.

So if the iPhone 5 is looking like a must-have device, it’s wise to wait just a few more weeks before making that purchase.

Fingerprint Reader Appears Likely

Thanks to the iOS 7 beta 4, we now know that there is a very good chance that we could see the iPhone 5S arrive with a fingerprint reader, something that has been rumored for months.

A fingerprint reader has been rumored to be at least one of the iPhone 5S’ unique features and one of its major selling points over the iPhone 5. However, rumors have been back and forth about whether or not Apple will be able to get the parts sourced ahead of the iPhone 5S’ launch. Well, iOS 7 itself seems to have nearly confirmed the fingerprint reader for arrival and prospective buyers need to start preparing for this to be one of the device’s heralded features.

An iPhone 5S fingerprint sensor seems likely.

The code found in iOS 7 beta 4 did not reveal much but it does point to a built-in fingerprint reader in the home button which would bring added security to a device that is a big target for thieves.

This figures to be one of the big upgrades on the iPhone 5S though it remains to be seen if Apple can make it something that buyers will want to buy into.

Little Chance for Redesign

We’re likely only weeks away from an iPhone 5S launch and there are still no credible rumors that suggest that Apple will be incorporating a massive design change with the iPhone 5S. Instead, they all point to Apple using the same aluminum design that is both slim and lightweight.

This isn’t surprising as Apple tends to keep designs around for two years before issuing a redesign. So those expecting the iPhone 5S to differ from the iPhone 5 from a design standpoint need to start tempering those expectations as the devices will more than likely look identical when they appear on shelves together later this year.

Don’t Expect a Larger Display

Rumors have suggested that Apple might boost the iPhone 5S display up to 4.3-inches but as we’ve pointed out, that seems very unlikely. Instead, Apple will likely keep the size of the iPhone the same, meaning 4-inches.

Don’t expect any major changes to the design or display size.

There is however talk of improvements to the display that don’t have to do with size or resolution. While the iPhone 5S is said to have a Retina Display, there are also rumors that the device could have a Sharp IGZO display, something that could help increase battery life. This certainly remains a possibility.

A this point though, buyers should expect an iPhone 5S display that offers similar resolution at a similar size. Those looking for something different, something bigger, will likely have to wait until next year.

iPhone 5S Shortages

Buyers will want to decide on the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5 or something else as early as possible.

Those preparing for the iPhone 5S should know that while the iPhone 5 will most likely be readily available, there is a good chance that the iPhone 5S will be in short supply come fall.

For one, new iPhone models almost always fall victim to stock shortages thanks to high demand. However, in the case of the iPhone 5S, recent rumors indicate that the device’s fingerprint reader could cause heavy shortages after its released. What this means is that buyers will likely need to quickly decide between the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5 once the new iPhone launches.

Apple typically offers an iPhone pre-order shortly after launch so unless buyers want to wait for several weeks or months before getting the iPhone 5S, a quick decision, probably ahead of launch, is going to be the wise choice.

iOS 7 Release Said to Be On Track for September

The iOS 7 beta 4 release is imminent and it appears that it will be one of several more iOS 7 betas as the iOS 7 release has been pegged for September, the same month that’s rumored to contain the iPhone 5S launch date.

At WWDC, Apple announced that the iOS 7 update would be released sometime this fall, meaning the earliest it would launch would be sometime during the month of September. In the meantime, the company has been releasing iOS 7 betas in order to test the software and ensure a smooth delivery to the millions of iOS owners.

The iOS 7 release has been pegged for September.

Today, the highly anticipated iOS 7 beta 4 is said to be arriving for owners of the iPhone and iPad after a bit of a wait. That is still unconfirmed, but at the moment, it appears likely.

What’s also appearing likely is an iOS 7 release in September. BGR reports that the iOS 7 Gold Master release is on track for September with Apple planning two more beta releases after iOS 7 beta 4. If this is true, it could mean that we’ll see not only iOS 7 released in September but the new iPhone 5S as well. Rumors have pointed to an iPhone 5S release in late September which could mean that we see iOS 7 and the iPhone 5S make their first appearance together in early-to-mid September.

Exact timing for the upcoming betas and iOS 7 Gold Master are unknown and those dates will likely not come into view until much later on in the process.

Despite the numerous bugs and the recent hacking of Apple’s Developer site, it appears that Apple is on track for an iOS 7 release not only this fall but during the month of September. All iPhone 5S rumors have settled in on September and given that Apple always launches a new iPhone with a new piece of iOS software, it makes sense that iOS 7 rumors are pegging it for arrival during that month.

iOS 7 will also be rolling out to older iOS devices including the iPhone 5, iPod touch fifth-gen, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2 and iPad mini. All updates will not be created equal as the software will be limited on some of Apple’s older devices including the iPad mini.

The iPhone 5S is expected to bring at least one unique feature. Rumors suggest that Apple will be introducing a fingerprint sensor on board the iPhone 5S and it could be that the software is related to that in some way. Like all pre-launch Apple rumors though, nothing is set in stone.

iPhone 5S Launch & iPhone 5C Rumors Challenged

iPhone rumors are out in full force as we move closer to iPhone 5S production and the suppose launch of the iPhone 5C, but the latest set of leaks and rumors appear to fall into the unlikely category.

On Friday a rumor that the iPhone 5S launch would take place on September 6th appeared online and over the weekend a bin of boxes for a budget iPhone called the iPhone 5C appeared online.

We shared both of these rumors as plausible, but today new evidence and commentary is in casting doubt on an iPhone 5S launch on the 6th and the iPhone 5C name.

The iPhone 5S launch on September 6th isn’t likely, and iPhone 5C boxes may not be the real deal.

iPhone 5S Launch Rumors

Apple is certainly working on a new iPhone that many are calling the iPhone 5S. On Friday iFunclaimed Apple is planning a iPhone 5S launch for September 6th, the day IFA 2013 starts in Berlin. This event would reportedly include the iPhone 5S and a second iPhone model which could be the cheaper iPhone or iPhone 5C as other rumors have pointed to.

While this is a plausible date, and Apple loves to overshadow competitors with well-timed announcements and event invites, word comes in that the iPhone 5S launch is not going to take place on September 6th.

Apple did not comment on the iPhone 5S launch rumors, but a single word statement issued on Friday is close to an official comment from Apple as we can get for rumors.

Jim Dalrymple of The Loop issues a “nope” on the iPhone 5S launch news. Dalrymple is not an Apple employee, but historically comments on Apple launch and release rumors with a “Yep” if they match Apple plans. In 2012 he essentially confirmed the iPhone 5 and iPad mini events weeks ahead of Apple sending invites.

Based on Apple’s financial filings, one firm believes Apple is planning the iPhone 5S release before September 28th to hit Earnings Guidance. If this is the case it could push the iPhone 5S release to September 20th with an iPhone 5S launch event during the week of September 9th. This isn’t a leaked date, rather a prediction based on working back Apple’s previous timelines.

iPhone 5C Boxes

A carton full of boxes with iPhone 5C on the sides leaked this weekend, possibly spilling the details on what Apple could call the cheap iPhone, but an image analysis points to anomalies that could mean this photo is a fake. Nowhereelse.fr provides the following six point teardown of the iPhone 5C image.

The iPhone 5C image may not be a legitimate photo of the cheap iPhone packaging, but this isn’t the first time we’ve heard the name. iLounge shared rumor of the iPhone 5C name earlier this year and evidence that Apple is working on a cheap plastic iPhone that might come in multiple colors is piling up.

iPhone 5S Fingerprint Reader Tipped by iOS 7 Beta 4 Code

The iOS 7 beta 4 update includes a small piece of code that points to a new iPhone with a fingerprint reader built in to secure user information and data. Apple is reportedly planning an iPhone 5S with a fingerprint reader, though other believe Apple is saving afingerprint reader for the iPhone 6 next year.

As soon as the latest iOS 7 beta arrived researchers downloaded the file to look for hints at what Apple is planning for iOS 7 and for the rumored iPhone 5S and discovered hints of a fingerprint sensor for the iPhone.

iOS tinkerer Hamza Sood discovered a BiometricKitUI folder and description of how an iPhone users could unlock the iPhone with a fingerprint in the iOS 7 beta 4 file, sharing the details on Twitter.

The iOS 7 beta 4 includes details on a possible iPhone 5S fingerprint reader.

Inside the code appears to be an outline for setting up an iPhone 5S with a fingerprint reader. The code references two photos of a finger on the iPhone and a status that changes as the fingerprint recognition approaches 100%. In practice, this could look similar to the video below which shows a finger unlocking a phone with a fingerprint.

The leak does not include any additional details about how this would work, but we could see new  iOS 7 features tied to fingerprints. In addition to unlocking the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, different fingerprints could launch specific apps. This would allow users to swipe a left index finger to launch the camera or launch right into email, while the right thumb would launch to the home screen. The iOS 7 beta doesn’t show Apple working on this type of feature, but it is something we’ve seen in use on Android phone fingerprint demos.

This is the first time we’ve seen any mention of fingerprint reader support in an external iOS 7 beta, adding to claims Apple is preparing an iPhone 5S with a fingerprint reader for this fall. Even if Apple is not planning to share the details about this until an iPhone 5S launch, it makes sense to see the code appear in an iOS 7 beta 4 release. Apple is reportedly planning two more iOS 7 betas before the Gold Master and public release. By including this code now, Apple could make sure it doesn’t negatively impact existing devices.

Apple purchased AuthenTec in 2012, a security company known for mobile fingerprint technology. Previously we covered how Apple could build this into an iPhone 5S home button even though leaks indicate there is little additional space in this area.

Apple is reportedly planning the iPhone 5S release for late September, which would place an iOS 7 release soon before that and an iPhone 5S launch earlier in the month, but nothing is set in stone at this time.

How To Transfer Contacts to a New iPhone iOS6

Then make sure the iCloud Backup toggle is set to ON.

Whenever the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and charging, the phone will backup. Once the phone has been backed up, migrating to the new phone is simple. By clicking the Back Up Now button, it will force a backup.

When setting up the new phone, it will at one point prompt the user to choose to Restore from an iCloud Backup. Choose that and then follow the prompts. A short time later everything will be on the new phone, including contacts and all the apps.

During the initial setup of the phone it would have prompted the user to create an iCloud account. Since a large percentage of iPhones sold are sold at wireless stores (and not Apple stores) the in-store associate most likely helped the user set up the account.

Adding contacts (and other information) to the iPhone through iCloud is incredibly easy if the user has access to a computer. Here is how to do it.

Open the web browser and visit www.icloud.com.

Then login with the correct credentials.

After logging in, choose the Contacts option.

Once the Contacts screen opens, select the “+” button at the bottom of the screen.

Then fill out the contact information and click Done.

The contact information will automatically synchronize with the phone. To verify this, unlock the iPhone and check the Contacts app for the new name.

Simply repeat the process for each person needing to be added and that’s it! It is much easier to input this contact information over the computer than by using the phone’s keyboard, especially if there are a large number of contacts to enter.
