Apple's keynote media event for the launch of the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 kicks off today in just a few hours at 10 a.m. PT/ 1 p.m. ET on October 22, 2013.

Apple is slated to unveil its next-generation iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 and the all new Macbook Pro line, along with the refreshed Mac operating system – the Mavericks OS X - at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California.

The Cupertino company's press invitation for the keynote address states, "We still have a lot to cover."

Apple will provide an official live stream for its keynote media event this week to showcase the launch of the fifth-generation iPad and second-generation iPad Mini. Apple just officially announced a live stream which will be available via Safari-enabled Apple devices and through Apple TV, , as the 'Apple Events' channel has reportedly appeared on Apple TV. The events video page for the October 22 event states: "Live Streaming video requires Safari 4 or later on OS X v10.6 or later; Safari on iOS 4.2 or later. Streaming via Apple TV requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 5.0.2 or later."

According to 9to5 Mac, the event will be available via simultaneous live stream from London. Apple held a similar satellite stream for international media in other major cities outside of the U.S. such as Berlin, Tokyo and Beijing for its iPhone 5S event in September, and they are expected to do the same for the iPad event. The satellite stream for the international media event in London will take place at the Kings Place Hall at 6 p.m. GMT.

9to5 Mac also reports that Apple will be setting up live streams for its employees around the world.

What to expect at Apple's keynote event on October 22

iPad 5, iPad Mini 2

On the heels of the success of the gold-colored iPhone 5S, Apple is expected to launch the iPad Mini 2 in the new popular color. It will also come in a new Space Gray color variant with anodized aluminum, along with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor that is featured on the iPhone 5S.

The new iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 are rumored to feature slimmer designs and pack a A7 chip, which also powers the iPhone 5S. It is also expected to pack the all new M7 chip, a motion co-processor. Fans hope that both tablets will sport a retina display.

New Macbook Pro

A refreshed line of Macbook Pro laptops is currently long overdue. The tech giant launched the Haswell-packed Macbook Air in June this year, but so far, there has been no sign of the Macbook Pro. This week's event is set to feature the all new upgraded Macbook Pro laptops, which will feature Intel's Haswell processor that will prolong battery life and improve speed. Rumors also state that the new laptop will support 4k display and also come with a supreme display technology. There are already rumors that the new Macbook Pro will feature Sharp's IGZO display panel with a resolution of 3840x2160 that will allow longer battery life.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Apple introduced the new Mac operating system at the WWDC in June. Since then, numerous beta-versions have been released to developers. This weekend, Apple updated it's final OS X Mavericks Golden Master (GM) version to a new build. The original Golden Master version (13A598) was seeded on October 3, and this week's upgrade to the GM version is the 13A603 version.

The Golden Master version is the final version to be released to developers before the operating system is officially rolled out to consumers by the end of this month.

Mavericks is expected to launch pre-installed with the Macbook Pro laptops before the end of this month and the new Mac Pros which will ship in a few months. Mavericks is expected to go live on the Mac App store either on October 22 or by the end of the month.

New features for the latest OS X include a new Maps app, a tabbed finder, iBooks, new look to the calendar, improved Safari, iCloud Keychain, multiple displays and more. See Apple's preview of the new features here.

iPhone 5S Launch Date Pegged for September 10

A lot of tech observers wonder when Apple will pull back the veil on the next generation of the iPhone, possibly named the Apple iPhone 5S, and now we hear from a credible source that it could happen September 10. The report doesn’t address whether we’ll learn about other new Apple products, like an Apple iPad 5, iPad mini 2 or new MacBook Pro models.

The report comes from AllThingsD, which has a history of serving as a leak farm for Apple. The site reported that Apple will announce an iPhone 5S and possibly a lower cost iPhone available in many colors, will come on the second Tuesday of next month.

The alleged iPhone 5S logic board is slightly smaller than the iPhone 5 logic board.

iPhone 5S Release Rumors

With the recent rumors that Apple’s board wants to see faster innovation, interested people may wonder if that will happen during this event. Apple holds a large share of the smart phone market, but as Bloomberg reports, their worldwide percentage slipped despite high earnings from the phone.

A midrange iPhone could come with this iPhone refresh. A few will wonder if that will spur enough excitement to keep the board happy with Apple CEO Tim Cook? What other possible new featuresmight show up with the iPhone 5S, or iPhone 5G as one rumor claimed Apple would label their new phone.

Apple has a history of releasing in a dual-two-year cycle meaning they appeal to customers on two-year wireless contracts. iPhone 4 owners waited for two years for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S owners likely waited two years for the new forthcoming iPhone 5S. To an iPhone 4S owner, this phone will likely feel like a big hardware upgrade since it sports a taller 4-inch screen along with other upgrades. iPhone 5 users already used to the taller 4-inch display won’t see much of a physical change other than the rumored features mentioned above and listed below. Instead, the iPhone 5 owner may appreciate the upgrade to iOS 7 with a colorful flat user interface and fewer skeuomorphic elements. Most of them will probably wait for an iPhone 6 in 2014.

iPad 5 Release Rumors

With fewer iPad rumors it’s possible that we won’t see a new iPad at this September 10 announcement. We should get a date for Apple’s new cylindrical Mac Pro and an updated MacBook Pro. We might even learn of a MacBook Air with Retina Display, although that’s unlikely since the Air just got a refresh this summer.

'iPhone Lite' on track for early Sept., but 'iPhone 5S' production more challenging

Apple's next-generation "iPhone 5S" is likely to face production difficulties, which could limit its availability at launch. Such issues are not, however, expected with the company's anticipated plastic mid-range iPhone, which will reportedly be much easier to build.

While the so-called "iPhone Lite" is on track for an early September debut, the "iPhone 5S" may take a little longer to become available, according to well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. Details on Apple's 2013 launch lineup were first shared with AppleInsider on Monday.

Kuo expects that any iPhone production difficulties faced by Apple this year will be similar to last year's launch of the iPhone 5. He expects that the "iPhone 5S" will see "limited" availability following its late September launch, with supply improving in either October or November.

As for the plastic "iPhone Lite," Kuo revealed that shipments will be below market expectations. But he expects the product could be available to launch sooner due to a less difficult manufacturing process.

He has predicted the device will be priced between $450 and $550 — higher than most observers expect — with a total of 26 million units to be shipped in 2013. That would be below market expectations of between 30 million and 40 million units.

Kuo views the "iPhone Lite" having "decent profitability, but at the cost of volume."

2013 Predictions

The launch lineup pegged by Kuo this week still largely aligns with the product release schedule he revealed back in January. The insider correctly predicted that Apple would have no major product launches, aside from a MacBook Air refresh, in the first half of 2013.

Fingerprint

The latest research note from Kuo made no mention of a fingerprint sensor in the "iPhone 5S," but the analyst has repeatedly asserted claims that Apple will include such functionality in this year's model. Specifically, he expects the technology to be embedded under the home button, allowing users to easily authenticate their identity for features such as password entry or even potential e-wallet functionality.

As for the "iPhone Lite," Kuo has portrayed the device as essentially an iPhone 5 with a plastic body. The new lower-end handset is expected to have the same 4-inch display as the iPhone 5, but with a thicker frame. Such a move would allow Apple to potentially discontinue the iPhone 4S entirely, moving its full smartphone lineup to 4-inch displays and Lightning connectors.

In what would be a marked departure from its usual iPhone introduction protocol, Apple is said to be preparing to discontinue production of the iPhone 5 when it debuts the handset's successor later this year, opting instead to produce only the "iPhone 5S" and an unannounced lower-priced counterpart.

The latest rumor forecasting the demise of the iPhone 5 came on Wednesday, courtesy of ETNews. The rumor would mark a significant departure from Apple's routine, as the Cupertino company typically keeps the last two generations of its bestselling smartphone in production in order to market them to lower-income earners and markets.

That system has led to Apple's current situation, which sees the iPhone 5 at the high-end, followed by the iPhone 4S at a medium price range, and the iPhone 4 often given away alongside a contract in the United States and some other territories. Apple CEO Tim Cook said this week that the iPhone 5 is the company's most popular iPhone "by far," with recent data suggesting that the device makes up half of Apple's iPhone sales.

ETNews' report focuses on the in-cell technology at work in the iPhone 5's touchscreen, claiming that that technology is "not suitable for low-volume production." Apple, according to the report, will abandon production of the iPhone 5, focusing on the high-end successor — generally assumed to be named "iPhone 5S" — and a rumored less-expensive, plastic-backed model dubbed the "iPhone lite."

Observers note, though, that leaks believed to show the iPhone 5S have all so far portrayed the device as having a display and touch array very similar to that of the iPhone 5. Production is believed to have already started on the current iPhone's successor, and some believe it will see release in September of this year.

Just after the French site Nowhereelse.fr leaked the iPad 5 schematics, an alleged rear shell of the rumored lower costing iPhone surfaced on the site as well.

While this case could always be for a Chinese clone, the overall template of the shell is very similar to the iPhone 5. We have heard rumors the the lower costing iPhone could come in multiple colors including green.

Citing information from various sources, Japanese blog Macotakara has released a report today with details regarding the rumored low cost iPhone, the iPhone 5S, and the iPad 5.

According to the site, the low cost iPhone will ship in various different colors. The first source claims that the low cost iPhone will come in colors navy, gold orange, white, and gray. On the other hand, a second source claimed that white, pink, green, blue, and yellow orange are the available colors. Some of these colors may not make the cut for final production.

The low cost iPhone will reportedly begin initial production in July to accommodate a September launch. Since the lower cost iPhone will have a lower price tag (rumored to be around $350 - $400), a polycarbonate shell is expected.

The site also believes the iPhone 5S will come in colors other than black and white, such as gold, green, and more. Additionally, the 5S is rumored to pack a dual LED flash, with a circular back microphone (instead of the current oval).

Finally the site did shed some light on the next generation iPad, suggesting that the it will ship after the iPhone 5S, and contain an additional microphone.
